How Can We End Our Discontent?

For What It's Worth

So many people are dissatisfied with what's going on in their lives, not to mention our world's affairs. Yet, for all their discontent, they do little more than complain about it. As a result, they keep getting more of the same, and sit by as it escalates.

Even though we may be proactive in other parts of our lives, something holds us back in these areas of discontent. We're paralyzed with fear, indecision, or just plain not knowing what to do. But these are just symptoms of a deeper problem -- a schizm within us that moves us further away from what we want, notwithstanding our conscious efforts to get it.

You've probably heard me talk about our inner obstacles. Within us are layers of unknown desires, fears and other factors that shape our world, layers that remain hidden. Yet they continually rear their ugly heads to rule our relationships, attitudes, actions and inactions. And when they do, what we get is often something totally different than what we think we're working for.

The solution can only come by traveling the long road of knowing ourselves. Self-realization. Inner exploration. The spiritual path. Pick whatever euphemism you like. The idea is the same -- uncovering the often-conflicting, hidden inner intentions that create our experiences of life.

I wish I could tell you what is going on in you. Even if I see it, it probably wouldn't help for me to tell you -- instead, it might set you farther back as those entrenched beliefs dig in deeper. You'd just deny it and resent me for trying. Instead, you're in the same boat as the rest of us. We all have to find it for ourselves, and then figure out how to deal with it.
