Here We Go Again

Somewhere along the line we went astray. We believed that we could simply make a choice of direction, and the rest of our life would magically fall easily along the path we set.

It doesn't happen that way.

Even when you're closely attuned to your inner voice, a choice one day doesn't mean you're headed for more of the same the next. No, it simply means you faced what you did today, and tomorrow you'll deal with what comes then. And sometimes that means a change of direction.

Making another choice. That seems to be a big hurdle for us, like our previous choices are etched in stone. Sure, we'd like there to be continuity. And of course, we have such things as commitment and responsibility to keep us going. Still, today's choice is not binding upon tomorrow. It is only one of many factors we can consider in planning how we want to experience our future lives.

Take your choice of career. It isn't static. Changing job conditions, income needs, locations, and plain old burn out all can cause a career path to deviate. And when something else comes along that strikes the fancy, what seemed so important a few years back may not seem so important now.

It's like yesterday's choices were simply to put us in position to consider the ones before us today. We have to face the choices that are before us now, no matter how much we'd like to see them in terms of what yesterday brought.
